PLANT PASSAGE
2025.
agar, gelatin, tapioca starch, plant grounds, gylcerin.plant passage is an exploration in harvested
flora-based bioplastic materials and their generative capabilities, grounded in unceded coast salish territory.
the material outcomes of plant passage are used as a central element of the avian lowpass installation.
BIOPLASTIC RESEARCH
– EXISTING PROJECTS
bioplastic cookbook by margaret dunne.
existing tapioca starch recipe from classmate nabi park.
emily carr “new craft” project by ryan lan, provided by aaron oussoren.emily carr “

ACQUIRING MATERIAL – HARVESTING/GATHERING
himalayan blackberry.austrian pine.pussy willow.cottonwood.
i also received scottish broom from instructor heather young and orange peel pulp as a byproduct from classmate audrey allanson’s natural dyeing project.
MAPPING MATERIAL
PROCESSING MATERIAL
chopping – using saws and secateurs was the quickest step to understanding fibrousness of plant + debulking material before grinding. shaving – austrian pine, himalayan blackberry and pussy willow tested surface texture’s affect on strength.
shavings of both the blackberry and the willow were casted
but pine bark and wood were ground together.grinding – most beneficial and efficient processing method to reach granular state. dry blending allowed for minimal cleaning time.
MOLDMAKING
3d printed brick positives designed in rhino.molding sliced bricks (for material efficiency) in vacuum former.there were several inconsistencies due to the sharp draft angles/corners of the bricks.
